So, you had joint replacement surgery? Which one? Knee or hip? I just had my second knee replacement and it feels like I got my life back. I was pushing 60, feeling chairbound, watching my life slip away.

I had the first replacement in '96, and it was a real bitch. Pain, and then some more pain. Oh, and then for variety, a whole LOT of pain.

I should have had both knees done at the same time but the doctor wouldn't bite. Which is another way of saying I should have gone right back into the hospital for the other replacement surgery upon completing rehab for the initial surgery.

Which of course I didn't. I was a pussy. I didn't see myself as able to deal with all that pain. Then Iraq happened. I started to see these stories about young brave Americans coming home minus limbs, and pushing themselves to master their prosthetics. I felt ashamed. I had no right to sit by because I couldn't take a little pain.

So I did it and wow! Was I ever surprised. This time it was so much easier. I went back to work after 3 weeks. It was astounding. So much less pain.

I hope I'm not boring you with yet another hospital tale from a reader.

Just want to say good luck with the therapy. - Jack Lavelle, Phoenix
